Gangster Sharad Mohol shot dead by own gang members in Pune, 8 suspects caught

A gangster named Sharad Hiraman Mohol, aged 40, was reportedly shot and injured by unidentified attackers in the Kothrud area of Pune. The incident occurred around 1:30 pm when Mohol was leaving his house. The assailants, numbering three to four, fired four shots, hitting Mohol in the chest, hand, and right shoulder. He was immediately taken to a private hospital in Kothrud for surgery and later transferred to another hospital. Unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries during treatment around 3:15 pm.

Mohol was celebrating his marriage anniversary at the time of the attack near his residence. Later that night, the police arrested eight individuals in Kikavi near Shirval on the Pune-Satara Road. They also seized two cars, three pistols, three magazines, and five live cartridges. The crime branch of Pune police conducted search operations in various areas.

The police identified one suspect, Sahil Kolekar, who was associated with Mohol’s gang. A case has been filed against the accused under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), Arms Act, and Maharashtra Police Act.

According to initial reports, the motive behind the crime was inter-gang rivalry related to land dealings. The police commissioner mentioned that the dispute was between Mohol and Polekar over land in Mutha village in Mulshi, leading to heated arguments the previous week. Polekar, who was reportedly beaten by Mohol during the confrontation, is suspected to have orchestrated the attack along with associates.

Sharad Mohol had a criminal record with cases of extortion, murder, and attempted murder registered against him in various police stations. However, he was acquitted in the case related to the murder of a suspected Indian Mujahideen operative inside Yerawada jail.

The Maharashtra deputy chief minister and home minister stated that it wasn’t a gang war but a result of internal conflicts within Mohol’s associates. Concerns about potential gang-related violence have risen, prompting heightened security measures in the city. Authorities have urged citizens to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activities. Heavy police presence has been established at key locations to prevent any untoward incidents.
